With Summer comes an increased risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. How do you determine which one among the many electrolytes on the market is the best electrolyte powder for you?

What are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are essential minerals in the body that are very important for various functions of the body that maintain the body’s fluid balance and help the muscles and nerves function properly. Examples of electrolytes in the body include sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, magnesium, calcium, and bicarbonate. Eating a healthy diet provides us with these minerals; however, there are some instances where supplemental electrolytes may be beneficial. Examples include performing strenuous exercise, being in an environment where there is high risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke like Summers in Arizona, diarrhea, vomiting, or consuming reverse osmosis water, which removes all the minerals in the water.

#1 - Are electrolytes safe for you?

The most important thing to consider when looking for the best electrolyte powder or any other form of electrolyte is the status of your health. Remember that electrolyte maintains the fluid volume of the body, so conditions like hypertension, heart failure, and kidney disease can be negatively impacted when caution is not taken. If you have any of these conditions, it is crucial for you to discuss this with your doctor for medical guidance.

#2 - What is in the electrolyte product you are buying?

Read, read, and read labels and understand the content of the product. Look at the Nutrition Facts, Ingredients, and Other Ingredients sections. This is beneficial to help you decide which electrolyte is best for you and find those not-so-conspicuous ingredients that may be unhealthy for you. Does the label have the essential minerals, including sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium? How much of each do you really need? Some of the electrolytes on the market are loaded with high amounts of sodium, which you want to be very careful with, especially if you have hypertension.

Other ingredients you should be cautious about are added sugar, zero sugar—check what has been substituted for the “zero sugar”, sugar alcohols, high-fructose corn syrups, artificial sugars/sweeteners, artificial food dyes or synthetic dyes which give it the color, names you cannot recognize or mention, caffeine, and amino acids --especially with kidney disease.

#3 - How to properly take electrolytes

Imagine taking 1000mg of sodium at once. Yes, not the best for the body as it has the potential to create fluid imbalances and is unhealthy for you. For example, if 1 stick pack or 1 scoop is recommended daily, you do not take it all at once. It should rather be taken in divided doses throughout the day. So, if you drink, let's say, three bottles of water daily, divide the pack or scoop of electrolyte into three equal parts and add it to your water. This process allows you to get electrolytes in at each point you drink water, which supports proper hydration and reduces the chances of fluid imbalances in the body. Keep in mind that for a healthy adult, ideally, 1500mg of sodium is recommended daily, and this includes everything you consume that has sodium in it.

The ideal sodium amount is 1500mg daily with no more than 2300 mg daily in healthy adults, according to the American Heart Association.
